2021-11-1 Non-zero net force in both directions?

Q: Can you have a Net force that is not equal to zero going in both directions? Or is it that you can only have a net force in one direction while the other will have a net force equal to zero? If you can, what would be an example of one? Talking about forces in 2-D sense. If both dimensions can have a force net that is greater than zero or not.

A: Yes, you could have a net force with non-zero components in both x and y directions, in both tangential and radial directions, or in both parallel and perpendicular directions. A typical example is a non-uniform circular motion, in which the accelerations (the net force components) in the tangential direction and in the radial direction are non-zero.
